#253: Why 80%+ of farmers quit by year 5 (and how to avoid their mistake)

The statistics are sobering: 80% of farmers quit within the first few years.

But here’s what shocked me during a recent coaching call – it’s not because farming doesn’t work. It’s not because their products aren’t good enough. It’s not even because they lack the skills.

It’s because too many of you set yourselves up for failure from day one with completely unrealistic timelines.🤦‍♀️

I just had a coaching session with a farmer who wanted to replace her husband’s teaching salary ($60,000) within 12 months.

When we ran the numbers, she’d need to go from $20,000 in current sales to $180,000 in annual revenue.

In one year🙀

They’ve got a farm business that’s basically starting from scratch with direct-to-consumer sales.

Can you see why this creates crushing pressure and anxiety?

It’s all okay, though – if you’ve never started a farm before, you had no way of knowing it was unrealistic.

In this podcast episode, I walk you through the exact conversation I had with this farmer. You’ll discover:

  • Why expecting to replace a full-time income in 1-2 years is setting yourself up for failure
  • The realistic timeline successful farmers actually follow (and why it’s actually GOOD news)
  • How to calculate what revenue you actually need to replace your day job income
  • Why adding more products when one isn’t profitable yet guarantees you’ll lose money
  • The mindset shift that lets you build sustainably instead of burning out

Here’s the truth: Building a profitable farm business is a 3-5 year journey, not a 1-2 year sprint.

And when you understand this – really understand it – something magical happens. The pressure lifts. The anxiety fades. You can actually focus on building something sustainable and profitable instead of constantly feeling like you’re behind.

The farmers who succeed are the ones who give their business all the time it takes. They don’t quit in year 2 because they’ve learned to set realistic expectations from the beginning.

If you’re feeling that crushing pressure to be profitable faster than might be realistic, this episode will give you the perspective (and relief) you need.

But here’s the thing – you don’t have to figure this out alone.

If you’re ready to set realistic goals, build a sustainable timeline, and invest in the support you need to actually reach profitability, I’d love to talk with you.

Because here’s what I’ve learned after working with thousands of farmers: The ones who succeed aren’t the ones who pressure themselves to make money faster. They’re the ones who give themselves all the time it takes to be profitable.

It’s an honor to have you here.
