This is Julie Hackmann. She’s going to tell you about herself. And I think you’re just going to love

meeting her and love hearing her story of inspiration and hope. So Julie,

welcome to the Profitable Mindset podcast. Tell everyone your name,

Okay. Well, I’m Julie Hackman. I raise sheep. We direct sell meat.

I live in Levina, Montana, kind of in the center of Montana. And my website is BelmontSpringsRanch

.com. Wonderful. Well, as I do when I have my clients on this show to talk about your success with

the program, I always want to start with what was going on. in on your farm in your life that made

you think you needed coaching both with marketing and mindset what were you struggling with what

were what was going on well when i um actually came across you last year it was january well

actually it’s december i signed up for your um free farm farm marketing um uh workshop maybe yes

okay Yes. And I had forgotten that I had signed up for it. And I homeschool my children.

My husband had just died a year before, about 15 months before. And I was sitting at the table

while they were doing their schoolwork, trying to figure out actually what I was going to do with

my business. And I got a notification on my phone that I had this podcast or seminar I was going to

watch. And I thought about not watching it. And then I was like, oh. what can I lose so I went back

to my room and I turned it on and within the first five minutes I knew I needed to get into this

class because oh wow you were talking about all of the things that I was struggling with I was lost

you know I had not

really a clear idea of what I wanted to do or how to do it and I had no confidence at all and

listening to you what I think you were actually going through an email of,

of a ladies and you talked about the, um, uh,

concept of one power of one and it was just like, Oh my goodness,

I’m doing everything wrong. So I watched the first day and then I watched the second day.

And then the third day is like, I had to see if I could get in and I couldn’t do it quite then.

Um, I reached out to you. And so we thought we’d try in April and, uh,

I was able to, to get in an April and in between times I listened to every single podcast I could

because there was just so much that just started making sense. And yeah,

it was, it was just, and I needed, I needed help with all of the things you talked about with how

many things you’re focusing on and, and managing your time, how to.

think about things in a different light rather than feeling buried maybe if you think that you’re

working on it you’ll feel better about it and it’s true it really helps so well and I don’t want to

gloss over what you said about your husband had passed away um you know 15 months earlier or so and

you’re still homeschooling kids and it was it was your dream. They can read the story on your,

on your website too. I love your story, but it was your dream together to have this farm.

And then like, this is one of the things that inspires me so much about you is how much you’ve

grown in confidence and all the other skills that you didn’t know you needed,

but you’re doing it all alone too. Yeah. And I so admire your strength and resilience.

So, you know, it’s it’s been hard because in our relationship, my husband always I mean,

we talked things over, but he was always the one that that gave the direction. I was more of the

follower. He was always a leader.

And so doing without him is just for a while there. I think that’s one of the reasons, too, I felt

stuck was I wasn’t quite sure where to start. Right. Well, and you’ve been married for 30 years.

Yeah. And you had. your relationship where he was the leader and you were the,

the doer and the supporter and all that. And all of a sudden you have to lead yourself now too and

run a farm. Yeah. Yep. Yep. And we still had, we, we had 19 children.

Um,

and I still had seven at home that were under 18 and homeschooling didn’t want to forfeit that.

There was something that we felt very strongly about. And, um,

so it, it has given me the opportunity of being able to actually grow my business. And when the

children are doing their schoolwork, I’m doing my marketing. So we’re all doing our schoolwork

together. So, you know, it’s, um, so yeah, it’s just,

it’s been, um,

middle loss for words. It’s been very helpful. It’s been, been great. Well, and I want to say for

me, it is, it, it is such an honor. to coach you and to have you in the program,

like to all my clients, I, you know, I love helping them, but then to,

to know that I get to help a woman going through probably the hardest thing you’ve ever been

through in your life. And I get to help. I get to be a part of support,

knowing that you chose my program to help support you through that is such an honor and a blessing

for me. And an honor and a blessing for everyone in the program too,

who listens to your coaching and who watches you get coached. And we’re just reminded that we all

have hardship and struggles. And you’re an example of, okay, here’s a woman who’s gone through what

many of us would think is the worst thing possible. And you’re doing it. You’re doing okay.

You’re learning the skills. You’re learning how to lead. You’re learning how to do.

everything that you did as a team before you’re learning, you’re, you’re carrying the vision on and

the dream yourself now too. So, right. Yeah. It’s a real honor to have you have you in my world,

in my life. Well, thank you because it’s been a real blessing for me. I think I’d still probably be

where I was. You have a saying, I think that’s you can’t get where you’re going if you haven’t.

If you keep, oh, I can’t remember how you say it now.

If you keep doing what you’ve done. Yeah. If you keep doing what you’ve been doing and expecting

different results, that’s the definition of crazy,

I think. So if you want a different result, you got to do something different. Right.

Yeah. Yes. So you joined and you were still grieving and.

And having to learn all these skills and you’ve got a farm and many children,

many little hearts to support and soothe. And, you know,

even though some of your children are out of the house and grown, you’re still supporting all them.

then you’ve got to learn how to market your farm and sell lamb. And I have watched you grow and

change too. But what was that like? Like all of a sudden you find yourself having to sell meat to

people, even though you have so much going on, you know,

the grief and supporting your children too. What was that like?

It was kind of a shock. I was, in fact, I was scared because I’m probably one of them.

One of the more outgoing of my siblings, but I’m not really an outgoing person myself until I know

someone. I’m usually fairly reserved. And the thought of going out and talking to people,

the thought of having to initiate conversations and put myself and my product out there was

terrifying. The thought of selling a product to people and… to go through all the hoops of

getting the inspections, you know, having it stamped, getting my permits,

not wanting to make anybody sick. It’s way scarier than now that I’ve been actually going through

things the way you teach. Break everything down into little chunks so that you can digest it easier

and knock things off the list.

It’s really helped make things seem less scary. And now I’m more able or willing to tackle things

that I never would have thought about before. I remember last year when you went to some event,

maybe it was in Idaho, from Montana to Idaho, and your kids looked at you in the booth where you

were getting emails and they were like, who are you, mom? Tell me about that experience.

That was funny. I shocked my children. I shocked my daughter-in-law.

We went to the Farm Market, no, Modern Homesteaders Conference.

And we’ve had a booth there for two years. And it’s a great place to go.

But standing there, you know, the first year, I think we got like five emails or something like

that. Or maybe, I think it was 14 emails. And because I just wait for people to talk to me.

And so we’re at our booth and as people start walking by, you know, how are you doing today?

You know, and what are you going to be, what are you interested in? You know, what, what classes

are you going to? And, and yeah, I think that first day we got 44 emails on our list and the kids

were like, are you okay, mom?

What happened to you? You’re acting like dad. Right? This is wonderful. Now, what part,

because you know, as I teach that in today’s world with the onslaught of AI,

emails are more important than anything. And you went from getting 40 the year before to,

I mean, 14 the year before to 44 in one day. What was it? What,

how were you able to do it? What are the things? I teach? Cause you know, my program is big and

deep and wide. What were the specific things that helped you be able to do that? One was there,

you had made the comment that they’re not going to, they’re not going to want to initiate the

conversation. And I find myself this way too, when I’m shopping, I usually just try to get by

without being noticed. You have to kind of make eye contact and stop them. Not,

not that they would know that you’re stopping them, but if you can, you know, you know ask them how

their day’s going or what they’re you know what they’re gonna go see or whatever and then get them

to talk to you and then ask them for the for your email and explain what you’re doing and just kind

of chat with them like a friend and um it was amazing it did people just were willing to talk for

the most you know there’s still this there’s still some that know i’m good you know they’ll they’ll

take off but um for the most part. And so then we kind of made a game out of it. It’s kind of like,

well, let’s see if we can reach, you know, the next five within the hour or, you know, and so then

it was just kind of a competition. And the second day we didn’t do as well. We only did, I think we

only did like 20 that day, but we also, it was a really slow day and most of the people we had

already talked to. So yeah, but still that’s five times as many as you got. Yes.

Because you put yourself out there. yeah so that was that was um that was very uh enlightening in

fact i had i had gone before we had even gone there my daughter-in-law and i went to a farmer’s

market and we were just walking through and i noticed almost all of the people all of the vendors

do what i would do in the past is you kind of sit in the corner and you just wait and you’re kind

of hoping, but kind of not hoping that they stop in your booth. Well, when I go to a farmer’s

market, I noticed that not only are they sitting down, they’re looking at their phones. Yep. And so

then the customer has this idea that you don’t want to interrupt and they’re busy. They aren’t

interested in me. So I’m not, and they aren’t trying to make eye contact yet.

This has so many of my clients at the farmer’s markets are the highest price. vendor at the

farmer’s market for whatever they’re selling. And they’re the only ones that sell out for these

reasons. Like you not only learn the technical skills of what to do with your email list,

how to write, but also how to engage with people. It’s sales and marketing,

how, how to make people feel connected to you,

how to connect with them so that they want to do business with you.

As a matter of fact, they can’t wait to do business with you. They only want to do business with

only you and they will pay whatever price you need to charge. Right.

Yeah. Cause they feel like they’ve met another human. Yes. Yes. A like-minded human.

Yep. Great. And then, so then what other successes? So I remember that from the start,

you were just in shock that you got so many emails and your family. What else has changed and

shifted in your marketing, your mindset, your business? You know,

another huge one that you helped me with. In fact, I had called for coaching. I think there was a

different issue. It was a mindset issue. I remember that. But then we talked about getting my meat

license and how I had called the gentleman or the inspector.

um then he didn’t well he got back to me initially but then he didn’t get back to me it was taking

months and months and i’d send him an email or a text and would get a really short reply but not

really a lot of help and then finally he told me you have to stop being so passive.

You need to be the squeaky wheel. You’re not in the luxury of being a housewife anymore.

This is your business and this is how you support your family. And I remember getting off the call

and thinking, oh shoot, I have to do this now. Okay. The way you said that made me sound really

harsh, sort of. I don’t know. No, no, it was good. It was exactly what I needed.

Because I think when I coach, my first thought is, I’m coaching from love and compassion always.

If I said you don’t have the luxury of being a housewife, it would only be in response to use.

saying something about being a housewife, but whatever, whatever it is I said, and then you

interpreted it and it worked. That was great. So then what did you, once you had that mindset shift

of, oh, I can’t just passively wait for someone to call me. I have to go after it.

Then what happened? Well, so then I called him back because after I got off the call,

I was like, I’m one of these people, if I stew about it and I put it off, I’m just going to make

myself sick. So I just have to get it out of the way. So I called him.

And he was like, oh, yeah, I’m sorry. You know, we’ll get that right away. And I had it within two

weeks. Great. But the funny thing is, is now I went and I got my wholesale meat license because

I’ve had some stores ask if we can put meat in. And so I thought, well,

that’s not a bad idea. So I went to get my wholesale meat license and kind of the same thing. I got

contacted him. And but he had me he called me right back.

had me send him my email well it went to his spam folder so after trying to email him an email and

finally i took a screenshot of the email and texted him and he called me and we actually had my

license that day so that was and and now i feel like we’re a team i understand and then he

explained to me that in fact he actually sent his assistant out and his assistant explained to me

that there’s the two guys They cover nine counties and several hundred miles.

And so it’s just, it’s like, you have to keep actors because sometimes it just gets lost in the

shuffle. Good. And it is the squeaky wheel gets the grease. So we,

and especially as women, but you being a woman who let your husband take the reins for 30 years,

because you were raising 19 children, it’s not because. You were taking the reins in other areas of

your life. And so now you’re learning that on your own to support your family,

to keep the dream alive, you have to practice these skills you may have never done before.

Like call someone back until you get a response. Don’t sit back and say, well, I called them and

now I’m helpless. I can’t get my meat license because they don’t call me back.

You took the initiative to do that. So what does that mean to you now today that you are a woman

who takes initiative, whatever you want, you make happen?

Yes. Well, it gives me a feeling like I, I’m actually credible.

I can actually, I can actually do this, support my family and people will listen and respect me if

I. just let them know that i need their help they’re actually happy to help and i i don’t have to

think of them as the big bad guy because they didn’t just jump right on when i put a little you

know it gets so wrapped up in what you yourself are going through or what you yourself are doing

you personalize it yeah that you forget that other people have problems too and it’s not maybe so

much as being even the squeaky wheel is just They’re busy. So you’ve got to keep reminding them

that you’re there and you need their help. Yes. And you said something really important that your

mindset shifted from looking at them as having power over you to now he’s part of your team.

You guys are teammates, your partners, your business partners in this meat business. Yes, exactly.

How are your sales doing? How has that changed? You know, that was actually very.

gratifying actually I I looked um I did a preliminary at the beginning of the year and then I just

put all the numbers together here a couple weeks ago and so last year before the program I had 90

about 98 in sales that year and that was that was everything that was a little bit of meat it was

460 worth of meat sales and then others were animals dogs livestock Last year,

it came up to $15,600 was our total sales for the year.

Of that, the meat sales, just from the farm marketing class, went up $1,000.

So I had three times my meat sales just last year. Three times your meat sales the first year in

the program. That’s incredible. And that was just doing a little farmer’s market.

And then I actually haven’t had any.

any email sales yet, but I know that’s coming because you say you have to hear from them about 27

times. And I think I’ve only sent out like 15 emails. So yeah, over the last year, but you have

developed the skill to sell and you do all the things like the set, you will notice sales coming

from different places, but if you show up in all the different places, email and the farmer’s

market sales will follow. Yes. And it’s been fun because I’ve noticed some other things in the

confidence field. Like I went to get my hair cut three weeks ago now. It’s been a month ago.

And the lady there, I usually I’m just quiet. Usually when they cut my hair, she starts chatting.

And so then we start talking about lamb and she loves lamb. And now I took her a sample of lamb

afterwards and she’s been buying from me. I did my first ideal customer interview that wasn’t a

family member or a friend that was actually a real customer because I actually had a customer that

wanted to talk to me. That was really fun. Would you have ever done that? Oh,

no. Not at all. Yeah. No. And this is what I mean when I,

because this is what I teach. We’re in relationship. In a world where relationships rule in the

sales world, if someone does not have a relationship with you or, or perceive that they do even

through email or online, they aren’t going to buy from you. So we,

we learned that I, you know, I wake up and every time I leave the house, I ask myself,

how can I serve one person, maybe potential customer today?

And with that mindset. everybody becomes a potential customer and you just naturally exude

beautiful things about your farm and here she becomes a customer. And then those are the people

that refer other people to you as well. Right. You know, and that’s one of the things too I love

about the program is another thing that when you’re going through our emails and stuff and you’re

reminding us, it’s not about us, it’s about our customer. Yeah. And you have to keep.

putting your customer first you have to earn the right to talk about yourself you have to um think

of their struggles their what they need to serve them and that makes in my opinion it makes the

selling of the meat much more rewarding when i’m thinking of it as serving my friends or my my

customers as opposed to just serving myself by taking the money that they’re,

you know, the reward for, for the product or whatever. Yeah. So many people in the program say

that, that I, what I say is marketing is serving, selling is serving,

selling and marketing is serving people. And because they have a problem and you’re,

I teach you exactly how. your product solves their problem.

And then I teach you exactly how to communicate that. And then they see your.

product as the solution to their problems. And people are willing to pay whatever price you need to

charge to be sustainable to solve their problems. And so I have, you know, it’s laid out step by

step and there’s formulas that help you recognize, you know, you don’t have to figure out what

their problems are on your own. I give you the exact formula to know what that is. And that’s your

brand. Your brand is. who you help and what problem you solve for them. And when you speak to that

in your marketing, on your website, on social media, everywhere you are sitting in your hairstylist

chair, they can’t help but feel compelled to buy your products.

Right. Yeah. It’s a synergistic relationship. They’re happy to support you and you are happy.

You feel good that you’re solving a problem for them. Right. I’m, I’m useful to them,

you know, or, yeah, it’s, it’s, uh,

yeah, it’s just, it’s a lot more rewarding than just, I need to go sell meat. It’s exactly, I can

go, I can go help somebody today. Yeah. It gives you energy and you have more time in your day and

you’re more efficient when you come from that mindset, instead of feeling like, ah, people don’t

really need my product. I should be helping them save money, not charging money.

It gets so weighted down and then you don’t make sales and then you prove that thought true. So

yeah, it’s just so freeing to shift to marketing is serving, which is a big part of what I teach

and coach on in there. Right. And I think that the mindset coaching in that department is

invaluable too, because those thoughts are always temptations to,

oh, I’m charging too much. Oh, I, they don’t really want this and then all you have to do is listen

to a coaching call and almost every single week there’s someone with the same problem and you

listen to it and it’s like oh that’s right you know this this is and it’s true you have to I have

some good friends who’ve been huge supporters and I told them I was going to be doing my lamb

launch and how much I was going to be charging for lamb And the look on their faces told me that it

was probably way more than they thought it was going to charge. But I sat down and my friend,

he pulls out his calculator and he’s like, what’s the average weight? And I told him and he’s like,

you know, $17 a pound, but that’s for all the cuts. It averages out to actually a little bit less

than what everybody else is charging.

It’s kind of, you know, at first it was kind of feeling, no, I’ve just got to stick to it. It’s,

it’s what I, I sat down and that’s what the numbers say. Yeah. You know, it, it’s not,

I’m not charging a huge profit. I’m just charging our time plus what it takes to put into the

product. Yeah. So you’re making money to pay. Yeah. Yep. Yep. You’re making money. You’re paying

yourself. Are you paying one or some of your kids too? Well,

we’re working on that. Good. That’s next. Paying yourself so you can pay the bills and then working

on paying your kids next. Good. Yeah. So, you know, as our sheep numbers go up,

well, I doubt that that price will ever come down because there’s always going to be more costs.

Oh, goodness. Yeah. You know, it is what it is. It’s not out of line with anybody else.

And people are willing to pay that. They are not. you know, they,

they’re willing to pay it when you connect with them and they have that relationship with you.

Price is not a concern. Right. Well, how about, so there’s three elements to,

um, the program I call the profitable farmer marketing and mindset mastery.

And, um, we talked about marketing. We talked about mindset coaching. What about the time

management program, which is life-changing for most people? How has that shifted things for you?

You know, it’s been really, really good. And in fact, it’s been better than really,

really good. And if I were more determined, it would probably be even better than that. But my life

this last year has been very, well, just like today with having to move this meeting back a couple

of times because my son, I have a son that is having some heart issues.

And so he’s had a doctor’s appointment that came up that It was supposed to be next week.

And then it was supposed to, he switched it to the time that we were supposed to talk. And then

wouldn’t you know what, they changed it again this morning. But anyhow, it’s just, it’s been just

one thing after another. I’ve had that. I’ve had a little, my 11 or 12 year old has a cyst in his

cheek. We’ve got all sorts of things going on. So it seems like no matter how hard I try, something

always just blows my schedule out of the water.

We actually, I decided I was going to do it a little bit differently. Instead of just doing the

schedule for myself, I was going to do a schedule for the entire family and then put my schedule,

put it in my schedule. So I know what’s going on everywhere. Ooh, great. Brilliant. And that’s

helped immensely. And we still had hiccups, like things getting moved around and everything. So

when I, when I sat down Saturday afternoon and then finished it Sunday afternoon,

getting things lined up for the week.

by Monday morning, it had changed like three times already, a few of the things, but on a whole,

everything else is kept up. And it’s just- Well, and I teach you how to build in margin time for

those, because on a farm, what’s guaranteed is interruptions and schedule changes.

So you have learned to accommodate those instead of letting them derail you. Yep. It’s like playing

basketball. You’re constantly pivoting. But it’s been- It’s been the last two weeks doing it that

way where I have both schedules, even with lambing, it’s gone very smoothly.

Wonderful. I can see once we get everyone adjusted to living on mom’s time instead of their own

time, it’s going to be even better. Good. Wonderful. Yes, I have a lot of homeschooling parents in

the program who let their kids go through the time management. program and the kids actually get

better than the parents.

They usually don’t have to pivot as much. Right. Well, you’re the mom, you’re the leader. And even

though you’ve got eight left at home, you’ve got 11 adults. And I think you have some grandkids too

now. Yes, I have seven grandsons and another grandchild on the way.

So everybody’s hoping for the first granddaughter. Seven grandsons and no girls yet. Okay,

we’re all going to do a group prayer for a granddaughter. Well,

congratulations. So yeah, you’re managing, what’s that, 19, 7,

20, you know, 20 plus. hearts and lives and schedules,

and you are the matriarch, the leader of the family, and you’re doing amazing.

It has been, like I said at the beginning, an honor to have you part of this program and be able to

coach you and support you through it. So I’d like to end with one last question that I always ask

those on the podcast.

If you could speak to a woman listening who thinks that this program,

she thinks she’s interested in it, but she’s not used to investing money in herself.

We’re often raised to believe that we have to make sure that that money should go toward the farm

or the family or our kids. Anyone else but us. We’re the last ones to invest.

But yet everyone who goes through the program changes exponentially. They change. Their bank

account changes. Their families improved. When they make more money, they can give more money.

Everything improves. What would you say to that woman who’s hesitant because of the investment or

even the time or anything like that?

You know, I would say that actually you should.

Maybe not hesitate because I learned there’s another way of looking at it. You’re not only

investing in yourself, but you’re investing. It’s actually in your business and it’s also in your

family because doing this has given me the tools and the confidence,

especially the confidence to do things that I never would have done before.

It’s only helped my business and my family, family life. It’s spilled over into personal life.

So I would say, you know, what you’re going to get out of it is probably going to be a lot more

than what you’re going to put into it as far as financially.

So, yeah, I would, you know, if a person does have a hang up about investing in themselves,

look at it as investing in the business and in more time for the family. later on because honestly

we have more time now together than we’ve had just from going through the program doing the

scheduling the way that you teach and suddenly realizing you know some of the things we were doing

were superfluous or too scattered or we could condense things that we hadn’t really thought about

before you’re just kind of on automatic and now You actually look at things and analyze them. And

so instead of going off the cuff all the time, you actually have a plan and you follow it. So I

think if they’re having trouble looking at it because of investing in yourself, think of it that

you’re doing a favor to not only your business, but to everyone else in your life by taking this

step because it’s life-changing. It’s great. Yeah, great.

Well, I hope. That definitely will touch people. And there’s studies that show when women make

money, we invest it, like the whole community raises.

We invest differently. We invest it back in our families and our community.

So it’s empowering for me to help other women make money because I know I’m teaching them through

learning how to make money on their farms i know they’re improving everyone and everything around

them too right yeah right well thank you so much for being here is there anything else you wanted

to say before we sign off here anything we missed or you wanted to share um you know i i would like

to just say thank you so much because uh i am not i am a uh I’m not in the same place I was last

year.

I have direction now. I think I know how to do it or I’m learning how to do it.

And having the support and the encouragement from you and the whole community in Farm Marketing

Mastery or Profitable Farmer, it’s invaluable.

It’s a big help. Yeah. You are welcome. It’s the biggest honor of my life to do this work for every

person I meet. And you are just a testament to we as human beings can face challenges we never

imagined, you know, we previously thought insurmountable and you’re doing it with grace.

And it doesn’t mean we just, it’s all work. Sometimes we have coached on grief.

for you. And, and like, you’re, you’ve gone through something that most people that are in the

program have not, and we have to make, and not just you, but there are people in there with other

huge circumstances and knowing that we can, you can ask for coaching to make space for the

challenging circumstance, cancer diagnosis, you know, all the things that we have going on in that

program, we can make space for that and hold space for that. And then turn around and live our

purpose and our passion that is farming and our family too. So it’s so holistic.

We make space for everything, the whole person, all of you. You bring all your parts.

All your parts are welcome. Right. Well, thank you so much for being here today and sharing.
