#316: How Do Farmers Go From Broke to Profitable? The Mindset Shifts That Get You There

How Do Farmers Go From Broke to Profitable? The Mindset Shifts That Get You There

Episode Summary

My dad’s farm went bankrupt in the 1980s. We were living on hundreds of acres of land and still had food scarcity, because you cannot eat wheat and grass seed.

I left for college convinced farming was a ridiculous way to make a living.

Thirteen years and thousands of farmers later, here’s what I know: your success is not limited by your soil, your location, your competition, or your website. It’s limited by what you believe is possible.

The farmers in my program average a 200% increase in sales in their first year. They usually earn back their investment within 90 days. Same training as everyone else. Different thinking.

In this episode I break down the simple, sneaky thoughts that keep skilled farmers broke, and the one question that gets you unstuck fast.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why two farmers with identical training get opposite results. The only variable is mindset, and I explain exactly what that looks like in practice.
  • How to spot a limiting belief that’s disguised as a fact. “I can’t raise my prices” and “email marketing doesn’t work” feel true. They are not.
  • The one coaching question that shifts pricing fear instantly. I use it on nearly every call, and it works because your brain cannot argue with it.
  • How to break overwhelm during your busiest season. Overwhelm comes from a thought, not from your to-do list, and there’s a fix you can use today.

Key Takeaways:

  • Your Brain Defaults To Negative, And That’s Biology
We are wired to scan for what’s wrong. That means a useful mindset is never a once-and-done fix. It’s a skill you tend to with purpose, the same way an athlete keeps a coach long after they’ve mastered the sport.
  • Thoughts Are Not Facts, Even When They Feel Like Facts
“Nobody in my area will pay $30 for a bouquet” is a sentence, not data. If you believe it, you won’t test it, and you’ll prove yourself right on the way out of business.
  • Ask “What If They Will?”
This single question opens up possibility faster than any marketing tactic. Once the door cracks open, ideas start flowing on their own.
  • Do One Thing, Not Ten
Overwhelm is created by “there’s too much to do.” Choose three essentials, pick one, work it for two hours. Which one you pick does not matter. Looping is what costs you the day.

Memorable Quotes

“Your success is only limited by your mindset about what’s possible about anything in your life and farm.”

“Our brains are wired to be critical for our survival.”

“What if it’s okay to hate marketing and make 10 times your sales anyway?”

FAQ

Q: What actually causes a farm to stay unprofitable?

Usually not skill. Farmers learn the marketing and then stall out on fear of being pushy, perfectionism, or not knowing where to start. That gap is mindset.

Q: Do I have to be a naturally positive person for this to work?

No. Human brains are biologically wired toward the negative for survival. Shifting your mindset is a trainable skill, not a personality trait.

Q: Does this apply to my type of farm?

Yes. Flowers, vegetables, meat, milk, eggs, fiber, wine, orchards, nurseries, garden centers. If you sell direct to consumer, this applies.

Q: How do I coach myself?

Write your thoughts down. Ask whether each one makes you feel positive or negative. If it’s negative, ask the opposite: “What if they will?” or “What if I only have one thing to do?”

Here’s what I’ve learned after 13 years of coaching farmers, and that is that your success is not
limited by your farming skills or your location or your competition or your website or your social
media or anything external. Your success is only limited by your mindset about what’s possible
about anything in your life and farm. It’s the only thing stopping you from being profitable is how
you are thinking. And I know that sounds like a big claim. So today I want to show you what I mean.
We’re going to talk about the mental barriers that keep farmers stuck, even when they have all the
right skills, the limiting beliefs that make you undercharge or practice perfectionism that keeps
you from taking action. I’m also going to talk about why some farmers see their sales double while
others stay trapped in the cycle of working harder and just losing more and more money each year.
All right. So I’m Charlotte Smith. This is the Profitable Mindset Podcast. And today’s episode is
called… From broke to a 200% increase in sales, the mindset shifts that get you there.
And so the farmers who work with me, I’ve done study after study over the 13 years I’ve worked with
farmers. They usually see an increase in sales on average of 200% in their first year in my
program. And then they keep increasing their sales after that. but on average 200%.
The program’s a year long and they usually pay off their investment in the program within the first
90 days on average. So they make their money back that they invested and then they go on to double.
and triple their sales the first year. And then they just keep making more and more money and more
and more profit the longer they work with a mindset coach. So whether you’re growing flowers or
vegetables or meat or milk or eggs or raising livestock for sale or wineries or selling fruit and
orchards, garden centers, everything I say today applies to every type of farming operation selling
direct to consumer. So at first though, I want to start with how I got here because I think it
matters a lot for what comes after. I’ll try to make it short. So I grew up right next door to
where I live now on my family’s farm. I grew up in St. Paul, Oregon, and I’m the fifth generation.
My kids are now the sixth generation farming. Two of them are farming. And we raised commodity
products when I grew up. And what happened was in the 80s, my dad’s farm went bankrupt and we lost
everything. And that was happening to a lot of farmers at the time for various reasons that all
came crashing down in the early 80s. And what was interesting though,
is that when we lost everything, because we were commodity farmers and didn’t raise food,
we had food scarcity. So here we are living on this many hundred thousands of acres of land,
and we couldn’t even eat food that we had raised because we didn’t have any food or animals. You
can’t eat. wheat and grass seed. So we were short on money, of course,
going broke, but also short on food. We had food scarcity. So when I went away to college with that
upbringing, that background, I thought farming was just a ridiculous way to make a living.
I couldn’t wait to get away, right? But then like many of us… my kids were in grade school and we
were living in the suburbs, I really wanted them to have this lifestyle that I grew up with.
I wanted them to be able to ride motorcycles and ride horses across the fields like I did. So we
moved back out here. I found this property I’m living on now and I purchased it. I actually did not
purchase this land with the intent of farming back then, because remember, I thought it was a
ridiculous way to make a living. I just wanted the lifestyle and to live near my parents,
which were my kids’ grandparents, of course. But what happened is we started discovering the health
benefits of farm fresh food, along with farm fresh living. So we started raising our own raw milk.
and pork and chicken and beef. And I had a farm store I wanted to share with our community.
And we were selling out and we just had a wonderful little community here.
People came from near and far to shop. And then what happened is other farmers started asking,
how was I able to sell all my products? And I was often selling at twice or more what they were
charging. They couldn’t sell half. of what they raised, but I was selling out and had a wait list.
So I started teaching farmers marketing here at my house. They’d show up, you know, one couple at a
time and our kids would play in the backyard. And then… When it got to the point where I was
having 50 farmers in my house, I was like, oh my gosh, I’ve got to do something different.
This is unsustainable. Can’t pack them all in here. I can’t spend enough time helping each of them.
So I put all my training online and started teaching marketing online over 13 years ago.
And today, my daughter, who’s now grown up, that grade schooler is grown up in her 30s.
She is sixth generation. She’s got a flower farm here on the property. That’s her passion.
And I teach marketing and offer mindset coaching. full time. We create your first year of marketing
for you. So if you’re new to farming or you’ve been doing it for years and you are not as
profitable as you want, just know that there’s help out there. I have several amazing ladies who
work with me coaching and helping with marketing. And we teach farmers how to make money selling
their products, whatever their products are, direct to consumer. But here’s the important part that
is what today’s episode is about. And the reason this podcast is called The Profitable Mindset is I
was teaching marketing skills all those years. And I noticed that while everyone learned the
skills, some of them implemented the skills and had success. And it’s probably about 10 years ago.
And others would be like, ah, I learned the skills, but I’m scared. Or I don’t want to feel pushy.
Or I don’t know where to start. Or what if I don’t do it right? They’d have the exact same
training, but they got stuck not doing it. And I realized looking at the two groups of people,
those having success and those not, is the only difference was in their mindset, which is your
thinking. Mindset are your thoughts, right? I realized that the ones who were having success were
just telling themselves a different story like, oh, I’m going to figure this out. I can’t wait to
help people with my products. I can’t wait to send these new marketing emails I got and get my
products in the hands of people who are clamoring for them and really want them. I can’t wait to
learn this new thing that’s going to help me serve more people. They had a positive and useful
mindset about it instead of those who weren’t having success or had negative and unuseful mindset
about their marketing. That’s it. That’s the whole difference is they were choosing a set of
thoughts like, I’m scared. What if I bother people? I don’t know where to start.
That was keeping them stuck. And the ones who had the positive, useful thoughts, like I’m going to
figure this out, went on to have immediate success and just go on to make more and more money than
they ever thought possible. So that was the main difference. I got started studying mindset
coaching on my own. And in 2018, I did a year long intensive learning mindset coaching.
I learned the science behind it, the neuroscience. I learned how to actually guide people to get
transformation. And I added this mindset coaching to my marketing program because that is the
difference that makes farmers successful. And now, because I take 300 people through my program
every year, it’s crazy how many people are having success on their small farm.
And it can be a small farm with, you know, thousands of acres or a small farm backyard garden.
But you learn to get profitable doing that when you shift your mindset. And this is every kind of
farmer. It can be flowers, every kind of meat, ranches, raising cattle.
poultry, eggs, fiber, winemakers, all the things, nurseries, garden stores, we’ve got all the
things in there. And of course, I live on a flower farm now, but every kind of farm product or
experience that you sell, this works for you. This will work for you too.
And so another question I get asked a lot is whether I always had this mindset or Did I have to
develop it? And I knew I was good at goal setting before I became aware of how crucial mindset is.
But we also have science that shows us our thoughts create the results in our lives.
So now it’s not only do I believe a useful mindset is how we reach success,
but I also have all this scientific research showing it and my own anecdotal evidence.
So to answer the question about have I always been this way, is our brains are actually
biologically wired to go to the negative for our survival. We’re always trying to look at what’s
wrong with something. So that might be an aha for you. I know it was for me. I was like, oh, that’s
why I’m sometimes a little too critical, a little more critical than I intend to be. Our brains are
wired to be critical for our survival. So therefore, not only are you not born with a consistently
positive mindset, shifting your mindset is not a once and done thing. It’s something you have to
tend to regularly. It’s why my clients come back year after year after year. You’ve got to be
intentional about it. If I’m feeling a negative feeling, then I know I’m thinking an unuseful
thought and that is not going to help me move my business ahead or even get through my day with my
relationships. So even though I was great at goal setting, and achieving those goals,
I still had an unmanaged negative mindset in my past,
especially around relationships. So I’m always reading and researching and listening.
And I realized that you can decide to think useful thoughts and then you will improve your sales.
You will make more money. But in addition to these amazing business results, your relationships
will get better. So I’m just like everyone else. I’m wired to default to a negative and critical
mindset, wired to see what’s not working and think about that and loop on that. So I have spent
years intentionally shifting my mindset. I have a mindset coach. And my clients, like I said,
they come back year after year. So they are always working from a useful, productive mindset versus
our default mindset, which is going to be negative and unproductive. Now,
the biggest difference probably between my dad’s farm and mine,
why I was able to get to success fairly quickly and maintain it, is that he had a commodity farm.
Someone else told him what they were going to pay. The commodity market told him the price for his
wheat and his grass seed and his beans and his corn. He did not decide the price.
And when the price consistently was lower than the actual cost to raise it year after year,
of course he went bankrupt. So when I started my farm, the mindset that got me through,
which was very useful at the time, and I didn’t even choose it intentionally, was this. I thought
if I’m going to farm, I’m going to charge a fair price based on the expenses and my time.
And if someone doesn’t want to buy my products at that price, that’s okay. They aren’t the customer
for me. There are plenty that will want to buy my products at that price. And this price is what I
have to charge to be able to serve them. So actually, luckily, I think I stumbled onto not having
any doubt that I would make money. I just knew that, okay, here’s how you market a farm. Here’s how
you build a brand. I knew that. I brought that training with me to my business. This is what you
do. This is how you do it. And I obviously have to price it to cover my costs and pay me a livable
wage. See, these are all mindsets. These are all thoughts that I had that served me. At the time,
I was the sole income provider in my family with three kids at home. I was pretty lucky that I had
that natural business mindset part of it. I knew my farm was going to look very different than my
dad’s. And if I wanted to keep living on the farm, which was my kid’s home, the farm had to pay the
bills and then some. It had to pay the mortgage, the groceries, the kids’ expenses.
Otherwise, why would you keep a farm? It just wouldn’t be worth it if it didn’t pay for itself and
our life. It was my job, my full-time job. So I knew I was going to sell direct to consumer so
that canneries and the commodity market wouldn’t undercut me and pay me less than the actual cost
of raising the product. And so that is my work today, working with farmers who are also selling
direct to consumer, teaching them not just the marketing skills, but the mindset skills too to
become profitable because you can’t do it with just marketing strategy. Here’s where I did struggle
though. I alluded to this before. I knew I was going to be profitable. I set up my farm to be
profitable. Otherwise, why would I work this hard? But the challenges that came up for me were
negative thinking around people and relationships. Things would get hard and I would just think
things like, this shouldn’t be so hard. Why is this so hard? And even that thought is poison and
makes things harder. When you think this shouldn’t be so hard, It’s going to make you feel worse
and you will struggle to make money with that thought. Or with employees,
if they would make mistakes, I’d get frustrated. And well, that’s not useful. If you’re frustrated
with employees, you’re not going to manage them or teach them properly. And it’s just a downward
spiral. So when I discovered mindset work, It helped every relationship I had on the farm.
That with my family, my parents, my kids, but also my vendors that I worked with,
my employees, and of course, my customers. So, you know, it’s really easy when you sell on your
farm. It can be tempting to resent all these people coming and knocking on your door outside of
ours or questioning your prices, doing normal human things. But if you… have an unmanaged mind,
you’re going to get resentful. So I started feeling frustrated,
resentful, annoyed, and mindset coaching cleared all of that up for me.
So it has been life-changing for me, my health, my family, my business.
Mindset work has been the thing that’s made running my business, not just profitable, but really
fulfilling. And every relationship I have is wonderful and fulfilling too.
And this is crucial and important because I do hear a lot of farmers who say, well, we’re finally
making money, but it’s just not worth it. We’re stressed and anxious and overwhelmed and we’re
resentful of everyone. And what they don’t realize, it’s not the people. It’s because of their
mindset. It’s negative. They haven’t learned how to shift it to something more useful through
mindset coaching. Because remember, it’s going to default to the negative if you don’t learn the
skill of mindset coaching, shifting it to the more useful thought.
All right. And let me get specific. Because when I say, you know, useful thoughts versus unuseful
thoughts, some people think it’s really dramatic. but it’s not. Farmers often don’t realize they
have limiting beliefs or unuseful thoughts because the thoughts,
the mindset that keeps you stuck are very simple. They aren’t dramatic.
They’re simple and you think they’re facts and it can be as simple as this is so hard or I don’t
know where to start or I can’t raise my prices. I will lose customers. That’s a thought,
not a fact. Email marketing doesn’t work or social media marketing doesn’t work or my website is
not bringing me customers. These are simple things people think.
And when we think them, we think they’re facts, but they are not facts. It is a thought that keeps
you feeling terrible about doing the thing that would move you ahead.
So if you think, email marketing doesn’t work. Nobody opens emails anymore.
Why would you ever send an email? You wouldn’t. But I hear this a lot and it’s an unuseful thought.
And my clients, farmers, 300 a year are making tons of money using email marketing.
So it does work. But if you think email marketing doesn’t work, none of my customers open their
emails. If you think that, you will not learn the skill of getting better at email marketing and
you will prove that thought true. And then you’ll go out of business. Another thought people think
that’s very simple is things like this is where resentment starts to build. Like, ah, people just
don’t value the work I have to put into this. People don’t value that I had to get up at 5 a.m.
to pick flowers, milk cows, or thoughts like people are so demanding.
It is just a simple, sneaky thought that seems true, but it’s not true. And it keeps you stuck.
All right. You won’t move ahead as long as you’re not looking at the thoughts you’re thinking.
And this can be the tricky part about mindset work. We’ve created this pattern of thinking that we
just default to. Like we wake up in the morning thinking, oh my gosh, I don’t know what to do.
I’ve got so much to do. This will never work. Blogging doesn’t work in today’s world. I could go on
and on with the limiting thoughts people come to me with. And just be aware, it’s very simple
things. They aren’t complicated thoughts. The things you’re telling yourself from moment to moment,
the very simple things are the things keeping you stuck. Like, I don’t want to write this marketing
email because no one reads email anymore. Number one, it’s not true. But number two,
you just chose to think that. And number three,
when you think nobody reads email, the last thing you feel is motivated to write an email.
So you won’t sell, you won’t make money, let alone a profit, and eventually it’ll do you in.
All right. So say you’re stuck in that mindset, like something like people aren’t going to spend
$30 for a bouquet in my area or this much for a chicken in my area or a quarter beef or plant
starts or this email doesn’t matter. So if you’re wondering… How do you get unstuck from thinking
those thoughts that you think are facts? That’s what coaching does. It’s the questions I ask you
that get you unstuck. I’m trained in a methodology that gets you unstuck.
And so I’m going to share a little bit here how you can do it for yourself. But for sure,
plan on joining the Profitable Farmer coaching program. Learn how to do this.
Learn from experts. Get your mindset shifted. We would love to have you in there.
But in the meantime, if you’re in your own head and you’re thinking a thought like, people just
aren’t going to pay this much in my area. That’s one I hear very commonly. And it feels so much
like a fact for you. The very first step on a coaching call is I would say, what if they will?
Because this is what happens. People come on my coaching calls every week and they’ll be like,
Charlotte, you got to help me. In order to make money, I have to charge $50 for this thing, but
nobody in my area is going to pay that. And all I have to say is, what if they will? And their mind
is blown. You will probably be surprised by just that simple question,
how it opens your mind up, how it shifts your perspective. So often on a coaching call,
someone will say, when I say, well, What if they will pay that? Their mind is blown and they think,
ah, you’re right. I don’t even know that they won’t. I haven’t even tried. There are some people
who, as soon as I say, what if they will, they just instantly start seeing all this possibility of
that being true. And then what happens is all these marketing ideas just kind of flow out of your
brain. So that’s the very first step. If you don’t have a coach that can point that out for you,
the best thing is ask yourself that question. What if it will work?
I don’t know where to start. What if you do know? I have all this, all these things to do.
I’m so overwhelmed. What if you don’t only have one thing to do in the next hour? So these are just
examples of coaching questions you should ask. can ask yourself. I do a practice every day and I
teach this to my clients where I write down my thoughts and then I look at those thoughts and I
just notice, does that thought make me feel positive or negative?
If it’s positive, it’s useful. If it makes you feel negative, it’s not useful. It’s not going to
drive actions that you need to work on your farm. And if it’s a thought like,
ah, nobody’s going to buy these $30 bouquets or $50 chickens,
I can know. If you know that, if you think that nobody’s going to buy this,
it will make you feel negative. And so when you write it down, you can look at it and say, oh my
gosh, I’m so glad I wrote that down. I’m so glad I know what’s going on in my brain. Now that you
have it written down on paper, you can say, hmm, what if they will pay that much for that? Mindset
coaching for yourself is as simple as asking yourself to broaden your perspective or consider the
opposite. It’s such a simple place to start, but it can open your mind to possibility.
Or it could be something you’re stuck on with marketing. Maybe you’re saying, well, I hate
marketing. And I might ask on a coaching call something like, well, what if it’s okay to hate
marketing and use it to make 10 times your sales? What if it’s okay to hate marketing and go on to
make a million dollars in sales, or I have people making millions of dollars in sales, or I have
homesteaders making thousands of dollars in sales? What if you dislike marketing and still make
money and profit, finally fulfilling your dream? Just that question can help instantly turn around
your negative thoughts, keeping you stuck. Now, right now, We’re in the middle of the season,
tending towards the end, the weeds. are probably out of control. It’s probably super hot.
You’re probably burnt out from endless farmer’s markets. You’re unsure how to price.
What’s the first thing to do? Okay. You might be feeling stuck or overwhelmed and just know,
especially this time of year, overwhelm comes from a thought. or a series of thoughts,
some flavor of, oh my gosh, there’s so much to do, or there’s too much to do,
or I don’t know where to start, or I’ll never get it all done, or I’ll never get caught up.
Any one of these thoughts creates a feeling of overwhelm, and then you’re going to be stuck.
And this is science-backed. That’s the process. It’s how our minds work. We have a thought,
creates a feeling in our body. And we take action or don’t take action from that feeling. So if
you’re feeling stuck, you can immediately know that, okay, I’m stuck because I’m probably thinking
some version of the thought, there’s so much to do. I can’t get it all done. There’s nobody to help
me. I should have done it better. I should have planned better. Something like that. And then you
can just pause and say to yourself, coach yourself, what if I only have one thing to do in the next
two hours? What if I only have one thing to do today and put everything else out of your mind?
So if I’m facing someone on a screen in a coaching call and they say something like, there’s so
much to do, I’m really overwhelmed and I’m stuck. It’s a very predictable pattern.
It’s also a very simple fix. And I can say, what if you only have one thing to do?
And they have immediate relief. I could see it on their face. They’re like, oh, well,
I guess if… do only have one thing to do because tomorrow’s pickup day. So today I really only
have to do this one thing. Then you’re done. You finish it and you can ask, what is the next one
thing I have to do? Oh, I need to sit down at my desk for two hours and get the marketing email
done. So when we approach it this way, they get unstuck and super productive very quickly.
And so you can try this on with yourself at home too. And just know that it is much easier with a
coach, with someone else looking at you who’s trained in this specific strategy and technology.
So now a lot of people will do this with three things.
Like they will just set, instead of trying to squeeze in 10 things for a day or 12 things in a day,
they’ll just set themselves three essentials for the day. That’s way better than 10. But here’s the
problem you might have if you say, okay, there’s just three things I need to get done today. You
might sit and loop on them and say, well, which one of these should I do first? If I do this first
and do that later, will that work? Or I don’t know where to start.
So we’ve got to stop that looping and just tell ourselves, here’s my three essentials for today.
Which one thing will I do right now? And it doesn’t matter which I choose.
So which is it? That’s it. It doesn’t matter which one you choose because if you keep looping on,
will I do the right thing now? You won’t get any of it done anyway. So when you’re sitting there
stuck, you’re not moving ahead on any of it. So just choose one thing. It doesn’t matter which,
work on it for two hours. That’s it. I also teach time management program along with my marketing
training for that very reason because farmers in general, and especially this time of year,
we think, Everything has to happen at once. Like I’ve got 10 things that have to happen today. If
you tell yourself that, you’re going to overwhelm yourself. So I deliberately teach you how to
calendar it in a way that’s so relieving. And when you use the calendaring process I teach,
you find 10 to 20 hours in your week when you do it that way. And that is life-changing too. So
the 300 farmers that go through the profitable farmer. many of them come back year after year.
I’ve got farmers who’ve been with me for eight and nine and 10 years because the more they practice
these little mindset shifts, like I’m sharing with you on here, the bigger their life becomes.
What I mean by bigger and more successful, they up-level their life. They keep listening to the
coaching calls. They keep improving everything on their farm. They don’t necessarily grow bigger if
they don’t want to, if they’re limited by land, but their profit grows bigger. Their workload
lessens. Their life gets better. They keep improving everything, every relationship in their life
too, year after year. And think of coaching like an athlete.
I think this is one of the reasons I was so open to it is I grew up a competitive athlete. So from
when I was a young kid as a competitive equestrian, I always had a horse trainer.
She’d probably be called a coach today or otherwise, whether it was piano lessons or running,
biking, swimming for sprint triathlons, I’ve always had a coach in the athletic and creative
fields. I never could have. accomplished all the championships and races I completed if I had not
had coaches. So it’s interesting to me that in the athletic world,
it’s very acceptable to have a coach like Michael Jordan, one of the best basketball players in the
world. He walks off a court during the middle of the game and the coach immediately sits down next
to him and says, okay, here’s what we got to do. And some of it is mindset coaching.
And some of it is physical strategy. We’ve seen that our whole lives in the sports field and it’s
acceptable in that arena. But running a farm is the same thing.
The farmers in my program, the farmers that get coached have successes they never imagined possible
because they have that person in their ear every week. developing them, supporting them,
encouraging them, giving them strategies and perspectives and mindset shifts and awareness and
examples of huge successes and the strategies that work from other farms too. We’ve got a wonderful
