FAQ
Q: Why does my farm have no money left at the end of the year when I work so hard?
Charlotte Smith, host of the Profitable Mindset Podcast, says the hardest working people she knows are farmers, and the money left over comes down to a different skill. She calls the cause the fatal assumption: believing that because you are an amazing farmer, you already know how to sell your products. Charlotte shares what she has seen across 13 years of coaching farmers, and she helps 300 farmers a year get their farms profitable.
Q: If my beef, flowers, or eggs are the best around, why aren’t they selling?
On the Profitable Mindset Podcast, Charlotte Smith explains that the best beef in three counties can still sell for less than it is worth when the selling skill was never part of farm training. She has watched farmers with 35 years of farming behind them, who never paid themselves, finally become profitable once they learned marketing, and she has watched brand new farmers start strong because they learned it first. The episode covers how that happens for farms of any age.
Q: Why aren’t my farm website and sales emails bringing in sales?
Charlotte Smith reviews hundreds of farm websites a year on top of her work for the Profitable Mindset Podcast, and she says the fixes are almost the same on every one. Visitors decide in about two seconds whether to stay, and Charlotte says your website has one main job that most farmers miss. She shares what she sees on most farm websites and sales emails in the episode, and she teaches the full fix inside the Farm Marketing Fix.

Hello, you. It is almost the end of the year. I know you’ve been working hard probably every single day this year. Either your flowers were gorgeous or your beef or chicken or pork was the best you’ve ever raised. I even have a shrimp farmer in my program and an oyster farmer and every kind of farm you can imagine. Or maybe your eggs sold out at the market every week. But what happens is you sit down with the numbers at the end of the year. And there’s still no money left, no money to pay yourself and no profit left over. So if that has been you, then this episode is for you because I’m about to tell you why that happens. And it has nothing to do with how hard you work. Farmers work harder than any people I know, and I know a lot of people after living as long as I’ve lived. We’re the hardest working group of people I know, but we’re still making the least amount of money. I’m going to tell you why. I’m going to tell you how to turn it around.
So on November 9th, I start my five-day event. It’s the Farm Marketing Fix. It’s the last time this year you can get your marketing fixed free. And I’m going to show you live that week how to turn the marketing on your farm into actual money in your bank account. It’s not that marketing doesn’t work. It’s that you haven’t learned how to do it in a way that works. All right. So there’s a way to do marketing right that works so you can make money. And there’s a way to do it wrong and you’ll never make money. And if you’re copying what everyone else is doing on social media, you’re probably not making money because that’s not working. So you can sign up. I’m going to tell you more about it in a sec, but sign up at charlottemsmith.com forward slash masterclass. And again, it’s the last one this year and it starts November 9th. That’s the day I want you to be there. It goes on all week, but that’s the most important day for you to be there.
Okay. So here’s what I’ve seen after a lifetime of farming and the last 13, 14 years of coaching farmers. Most farmers hold this belief that if I know how to farm and my products are amazing, then they’ll sell. And you think, of course, I understand the business that sells my products. Just make them great. It feels so true. Like, of course you can run a flower farm. Your flowers are incredible. Or you’re an excellent designer. Or of course your beef or pork or chickens will sell. You raise it on beautiful regenerative land. But growing the product and selling the product are two completely different skill sets and nobody is teaching farmers how to sell their products. So it is true. You can have the absolute best beef or chicken or dahlias or u-picks or raw milk in three counties and still not get paid what it’s worth because the selling skill was never part of your farm training. That is what I do. I help 300 farmers a year get their farms profitable through learning the skill of marketing and selling.
Okay, so that is what I call the fatal assumption. This idea that I’m an amazing farmer, therefore I know how to sell my products. The good news though is marketing is a skill that can be learned. And the truth is you’ve got to learn it if you want to stay in business. I’ve watched farmers with 35 years of farming behind them who actually never paid themselves during that time finally become profitable once they learn these skills. I’ve also watched brand new farmers hit the ground running because they learned the marketing I teach first, or they learned it as they were planting their first beds or bringing home their first cow. So it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a farmer. If you’re brand new or 35 years or anywhere in between, if you haven’t invested the time to learn marketing, you just won’t ever be able to keep enough money to be profitable.
So here’s what the Farm Marketing Fix looks like. Here’s what we do during that week. The first day, November 9th, we fix your website. I will be pulling up real farms’ websites live and show you what’s costing those farmers sales. And I can review yours. When you sign up, you’ll get an email inviting you to submit your website. I can give you feedback on your site too. Otherwise, the feedback I give them is exactly what you need to hear. The fixes that you need to make on your website are the same on almost every farm website I see. And that is hundreds of websites a year. So the very top of the page, it often has a pretty picture of a pasture or flower beds or bouquets or cows on grass or chickens. And it looks like every other farm and every other flower farm in the country. And since people decide in about two seconds whether to stay on your website because you can help them or click away, if all they see is this pretty photo of a pasture or barn or flowers or a farm store, you’re not anyone special to them and they’re going to click away.
So during the Farm Marketing Fix, you will learn exactly what you need on your website right there at the top to make people want to drive past a cheaper farm or past the grocery store to buy from you. So that’s the first thing you’re going to learn. Then once you get the image at the top of your site right and correct, you will learn what three things you’ve got to list out next in order to build a profitable farm. The last thing you’re going to learn about websites. Well, no, you’re going to learn dozens of things that day. But the last one I’m going to mention here is there is one main job of your website. Just one. There is one priority for your website and it’s the one you’re missing, guaranteed, and it’s not to tell them about your amazing products or how to buy. Believe it or not, that just will not work to ever make you enough sales. So I’ll show you using other farms’ websites as examples or yours if you send me your link, how to set up your site so it does what it’s supposed to do, which is to attract and secure customers who can’t wait to buy from you at the prices you need to charge. So that’s what you’re going to learn free during the Farm Marketing Fix. You can’t miss it. You got to be there. It’s free. There’s no reason not to. It is recorded. So if you can’t make it every day, you can see the replays, but try to make it at least Monday, November 9th.
On day two, I will be fixing farmers’ sales emails or newsletters. I will show you how to write them in a way that’ll make you sales. And again, you can send me your most recent farm newsletter or one you want to send. I’ve spent the last few weeks talking about Black Friday emails. If you took a try at writing some emails for Black Friday, send one of those over. We’ve still got time. If I review it on November 10th, you still have time to get that Black Friday email set and scheduled and ready to go out. All right. So I can review that for you there that week. So what you’re going to learn about emails is I’m going to teach you what I call the power of one, where you’re going to have this one email where you talk about one thing and one way to buy it. And it’s the opposite of what I see most farmers do. They’re usually listing several products for sale. Like here’s all the different things we have for sale. And here’s all the different ways you can buy it. And you can go to all these different farmers markets, or you can come to the farm stand, or you can get on our delivery list. And by the way, you can buy a Thanksgiving centerpiece or take this class. And so farmers think that more choices in their sales emails means more chances to sell. But you’re going to learn in the Farm Marketing Fix why the opposite is true and how to do it right. All right. So I promise you, you will sell more of one thing when you learn to write the way I teach during that week.
So the other thing is people tell me that when they send an email and people aren’t buying, it’s because they are in the wrong location or their community just doesn’t appreciate farm fresh flowers or farm fresh meat or farm fresh milk. I promise you it is not true. It’s none of that. I will show you what does work, how to write your marketing in a way that makes sales. So meat farmers, for instance, they will send me an email where they’re trying to sell a quarter beef and a half a beef or a half a hog or a box of pork and beef bundle or chickens or whole chickens or cut up chickens or chicken subscriptions. They offer all these different ways to buy their products. Flower farmers do the same thing. It’ll never work. And again, you’re going to learn how that week. All right. So again, these are the skills you’ve got to learn if you want to be in business and actually make money. And this is too hard of work for you to not be making money. Eventually, you’ll give up if you don’t start to make money. I’ve got people signing up for the Farm Marketing Fix now and writing in. I ask you to reply to the confirmation email you get. And they’re writing in and saying, this is my do or die year. Either we got to make money this year or we’re going to go out of business. You’ve got to learn the skill of making money. That’s what I teach.
Okay. So during the Farm Marketing Fix, come get coached by me or watch other farmers get coached. Again, it’s the last free event of the year. It’s going to give you something to do in the slow downtime after harvest is over. Not everyone has a slow downtime, but a lot of us, our harvests have just wrapped up and we’re going to have a little more time for office work. So this is great timing for you. And let me tell you what changes will happen by Friday, November 13th of the Farm Marketing Fix. You will know why your marketing hasn’t been making money. Not a guess, but you will see the real reason other farms are making money and yours is not. So then you will have concrete steps you can take to fix your website and write marketing posts and emails differently so they start to sell. Farmers in my program will make thousands and sometimes tens of thousands of dollars from a single email. And it starts with the things I teach you in the Farm Marketing Fix.
So you’ve got to be there. All right. Just sign up. Again, it’s free. You’ll get all the confirmations and the link in the email when you sign up. And it’s at charlottemsmith.com forward slash masterclass. And I would love to see you there. We always have a big group live and it is really fun and energizing. It’s going to be a fun event. The comment section is wild. You will meet farmers from all across the country. You will connect with other people, but you will also be inspired to change things and fix things. And they aren’t hard things. They’re simple things that will make your marketing work so much better. All right. I can’t wait to see you there. Get signed up. Send in your website link or a sales email. Let me review it for you. That would be really fun. And if you don’t want to do that, that’s okay. Or maybe you don’t have a website up yet. No problem. You’re going to learn there the things you need to do to get yours working for you now. All right. Take care. And I will see you November 9th.
